Are You Ready To Sell Your House?

Capucine Leroux

It's not uncommon for people to live in more than one house in their lifetime. But how do you know whether it's time to sell your current home and move into a new one? If you're starting to think it might be time to sell, here are some questions to ask yourself to help you settle on the answer.

Can you afford the type of home you would like to move into?

Spend a little time looking at the homes for sale that you would be interested in moving into. Do those homes fit into your budget? Consider how much equity you have in your current home and how much you have available to use as a down payment. Also, consider how much your payments would be on a new home that you would buy. If you have enough to put down and the payments are manageable, this is a sign you are ready to sell your current home and move on if you so choose. If you can't quite afford the type of home you'd like to move into yet, then you may want to wait a bit longer before you sell your current home.

Is the home ready to sell?

Your home does not have to be perfect in order for you to sell it, but you do want it to be in overall good shape. If it needs new carpets, a new roof, or some extensive HVAC repairs, then it may not be appealing to buyers, and it may sit on the market for too long. Have a real estate agent come look at the home and tell you what upgrades should be made before you're ready to sell. If they tell you that the home is good to go, then this is a sign that you're ready to sell.

Do you have the time to dedicate to moving?

Even if you hire movers to do a lot of work, moving is time-consuming. If you're really busy with work or family right now, then it may not be the best time to sell your home. You may instead want to wait for a quieter season to sell. Whether that's 3 months or 3 years from now, selling will be easier when you have time to focus on the process.

If you do think you're ready to sell your house, make sure you contact a real estate agent. They can get the ball rolling.
