Selling Your Home? What You Should Take To The Closing

Capucine Leroux

Selling a home ends with meeting at the title company to sign all of the official paperwork. While it is a time to celebrate, you also want to make sure that you bring everything that's necessary to avoid any delays in the closing process. This is especially true when you have a home purchase of your own that is pending, and you need the money from closing to pay off your next home. These are some things you should take to your closing that will be needed.

The Keys

Your home most likely has a lot of keys, and you need to bring all of them to the closing. Sometimes the seller makes the mistake of just bringing the key to the main door, but there are other keys you need to think about. For instance, if you live in a condo, there may be additional keys needed for a mailbox and a storage unit.

While chances are that any new owner is going to change all of the locks in the home immediately, you still need to bring them the keys so that they have access to all parts of the home. If not, you could find yourself scrambling to find them at the last minute.

In addition, don't forget additional copies of keys that you have and to remove any hidden keys that may be located outside your home for emergency entry.

Additional Necessities

In addition to keys, there are other necessities that any new owners will need once they take control of the home. Don't forget to remove the garage door opener from your car so that you can turn that over as well. It may seem obvious, but people often forget it because it's something they placed in their car years ago and have never moved.

If your home has an alarm code, you'll also need to write it down for new owners as well, including directions on how to change the code.

Your ID

You do need an ID that has been issued by the government for your closing, which could include a passport, state ID, or driver's license. When in doubt about whether your ID will work, ask your mortgage lender to make sure you have the right ID on hand. Social security cards, school IDs, and birth certificates won't get the job done.
