Signs Your House May Be Difficult To Sell

Capucine Leroux

Have you wondered why some houses take too long on the market even while others are selling like hotcakes? Here are some reasons your house may be difficult to sell:

It Has an Unpopular Room Addition

If you added a room to your house, and the addition wasn't well planned, then you might have a hard time selling. For example, this may be the case if you have added a small room that has no specific purpose and has decreased the size of your front yard or backyard. It may also be the case if the additional room isn't built up to the same standards as the main house in terms of materials or design. It might even be the case if the additional room has interfered with the aesthetics of your home.

It Is Extremely Big Relative to Neighboring Houses

People look for homes in areas where they will fit in. A person who wants to live in a seven bedroom house will not look for it in a neighborhood full of three-bedroom houses. Therefore, you may find it difficult to sell your property if you live in a five-bedroom house while your neighbors' houses all have four bedrooms or less.

It Has a Customized Interior

Your house may also be difficult to sell if you customized its interior to fit your unconventional lifestyle or tastes. Maybe you knocked down some walls to merge two bedrooms or downsized the kitchen (that you rarely use). In that case, the home may be difficult to sell because you may need to wait for a buyer with tastes similar to yours.

It Was Remodeled With Inferior Materials

A remodeled or renovated house may be difficult to sell if the remodeling or renovation didn't involve the same high-quality materials as the original construction. This is especially true if the renovation was done sometime in the past and the difference between the original and remodeled places is showing.

It Has Not Been Prepped For the Sale

Lastly, your home may also be difficult to sell not because there is something wrong with it, but because you have not prepared for the sale. You don't just wake up one day, take pictures of your house, and list it for sale. You need to clean it, make small repairs, and declutter the house to improve its appearance to potential buyers.

A real estate agent can help you a lot when you are selling a house whether the house is difficult to sell or not. However, you definitely need an agent if you have tried selling a house on your own and you aren't getting any reasonable offers.
